Open an Excel workbook, choose the worksheet and download its CSV. For several sheets or workbooks, download all imported tables in one ZIP. Processing stays in your browser; you do not need Excel installed. CSV carries rows and columns, not workbook styling.
Export an Excel worksheet in three steps
- Open one or more XLS, XLSX, XLSB or ODS files. Each worksheet becomes a table; the first row of its used range supplies the headers.
- Choose saved values or formula text. After changing this setting, apply it to reread the files. Select the sheet and inspect the result and issues.
- Keep the result tab selected to download the current data table. For all sheets, use the ZIP download.
Working specifically with .xlsx? See XLSX to CSV for that format’s export details. To edit a result, use Open in editor to send it to the CSV editor.
What happens to values, dates and hidden sheets?
- Formulas are not calculated. The default reads saved results; a formula without a saved result produces a blank value and an issue. Formula-text mode extracts the expression. Macros never run.
- Date-formatted numeric cells use their formatted date text; check the preview because it can differ from your Excel locale. Other numbers use stored values, so a numeric cell displayed as
00731by formatting alone exports as731. A text cell containing00731keeps its zeros. - Digits already lost in the workbook cannot be recovered. Large numeric cells are flagged for review; identifiers stored as text retain the text. CSV downloads prefix formula-like values with an apostrophe rather than making them executable.
- Hidden sheets are included. A blank sheet can appear as a header-only table. Blank headers become
column_1and similar names; duplicate headers gain underscores. Colours, merged-cell layout and charts are not exported.
One cleaned table or the complete workbook
Column selection and masking affect only the current table and actions using that table. Selecting another table resets those choices. The download follows the active tab: result, schema or issues.
The ZIP contains all originally imported tables, including hidden sheets. It does not apply the current table’s column exclusions or masking. For a filtered or masked export, download that table individually. CSV uses UTF-8 and commas here; this panel has no delimiter or encoding selector.
File limits and the reverse conversion
Import up to 20 files totalling 25 MiB and up to 100 tables. Each table allows 100,000 data rows and 250 columns; the batch allows 2 million cells. Compressed workbooks are also checked against a 100 MiB expanded limit. To return a CSV to a workbook, use CSV to Excel; for several CSVs and custom sheet groups, use Batch CSV to Excel.
Example: keep a product code stored as text
Synthetic workbook data: the Stock sheet contains a text SKU and a numeric quantity. The output below was checked with the same importer and CSV exporter. The leading zeros survive because the source SKU is text, not a number with a display mask.
{"sheet":"Stock","rows":[["sku","qty"],["00731",12]]}sku,qty 00731,12
