ViewCSV is a set of free browser tools for CSV and TSV files: a viewer and editor, tools to filter, sort, clean, validate, merge, split, compare and analyze data, and converters to 12 formats. Files are read and processed by your browser on your device; ViewCSV has no upload endpoint for CSV data and no account is needed.
How your files are processed
- When you open a file, your browser reads it from your disk. Parsing and conversion run in a background Web Worker in the same tab, so the page stays responsive and Cancel can stop a job.
- A file you open in one tool stays in that tab’s memory while you move between tools. It is not written to storage and is gone when you close the tab.
- Two optional components are downloaded from
assets.viewcsv.apponly when a task needs them: the SQLite engine (WebAssembly, for CSV to SQLite and SQL queries) and Noto fonts (for PDF output in non-Latin scripts). They are static files; your data is never sent to that address. - Downloads are created in the browser and saved directly to your device.
Analytics
Basic page counts are always on: a self-hosted Plausible instance receives the address of each public page you open (without query string or fragment) and, on the first page, only the name of the site you came from. It uses no cookies. Only if you allow optional analytics in the cookie settings does the site also load Google Analytics (page views and three coarse usage events: input source and size band, export format, error code) and Microsoft Clarity. Advertising signals are always turned off. No file contents, file names, cell values or search text are sent to any analytics service, and areas of the page that show your data are marked so Clarity does not record them. Details are in the privacy policy.
Open-source components
ViewCSV is built with open-source software, including:
| sql.js 1.15.0 | SQLite compiled to WebAssembly (MIT; SQLite is public domain) |
|---|---|
| hyparquet-writer | Apache Parquet writer in JavaScript (MIT) |
| write-excel-file | XLSX writer (MIT) |
| jsPDF and jspdf-autotable | PDF tables (MIT) |
| fflate | Gzip and ZIP (MIT) |
| yaml | YAML writer (ISC) |
| Papa Parse | CSV parsing in the earlier workspace (MIT) |
| Noto Sans fonts | PDF fonts for Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic (SIL Open Font License 1.1) |
| TanStack Start, React | Web framework (MIT) |
How the pages are written and checked
Tool pages and guides were written with the help of AI and checked against the running tools: every example output on a tool page was produced by that tool’s own code, and behaviour described in the guides is covered by automated tests (for example, round trips that reopen each converted file with an independent reader). References point to the standards themselves, such as RFC 4180 for CSV.
The site is available in 15 languages. Each language is written for its readers rather than translated sentence by sentence, using the vocabulary of that market’s spreadsheet and CSV tools. The translations have not yet been reviewed by native speakers.
Limits stated on each page are the limits enforced by the code. Performance figures are only stated where they were measured, together with how they were measured.
What ViewCSV does not do
- It does not store, back up or sync your files, so download your work before closing the tab.
- It does not open Excel, Parquet or JSON files yet; convert those to CSV first.
- It does not offer accounts, an API or a server-side processing option.
Browser extension
A ViewCSV extension for Chromium browsers is in development and not yet published in any store. See the browser extension page for what it does and its separate privacy policy.
Contact
ViewCSV does not publish a contact address yet. This page will list one when it is available.
