Open a CSV contact list and the converter matches columns such as First Name, Email and Phone to vCard fields, then writes one card per row into a single .vcf file that phones and address books can import. Check the matches, pick vCard 4.0 or 3.0, and download. The file is converted in your browser and never uploaded.

How to convert CSV to vCard

  1. Select Open file, drop a .csv, .tsv or .txt export from your CRM, spreadsheet or mail tool, or choose Paste. Check the delimiter and encoding under Import settings if names look garbled.
  2. Choose the vCard version: vCard 4.0 for current phones and apps, vCard 3.0 for older address books.
  3. Review Match columns to contact fields. Columns are matched by header name; change any field, or set it to Not used. Less common fields are under More options.
  4. Select Download VCF and import the file into your phone, Google Contacts, Outlook or Apple Contacts.

Clean up the list first if it has stray spaces or duplicates: Clean CSV trims and removes duplicates, and Map CSV columns can rename or combine columns before you convert.

Which fields are written

Full nameFN, the name the contact is shown under. If it is not mapped or empty, it is built from prefix, first, middle and last name and suffix; failing that, the company, then the personal or work email.
First, last and middle name, prefix, suffixN, the structured name (Last;First;Middle;Prefix;Suffix). vCard 3.0 always writes it, because 3.0 requires it; 4.0 writes it only when one of the parts has a value.
Nickname, Company, Job titleNICKNAME, ORG and TITLE.
Email (personal), Email (work)EMAIL;TYPE=home and EMAIL;TYPE=work.
Mobile phone, Work phone, Home phoneTEL;TYPE=cell, voice, TEL;TYPE=work, voice and TEL;TYPE=home, voice. Numbers are copied as written, spaces and + included.
Street, City, State or region, Postal code, CountryOne ADR with the parts in vCard order; it is written when at least one part has a value.
Website, Birthday, NotesURL, BDAY and NOTE. The birthday is copied as written, so use a date such as 1985-04-12.

Each field takes one column, and automatic matching uses each column at most once. A cell holding two addresses, such as a@example.com; b@example.com, stays one value; put the second address in its own column and map it to Email (work).

How tricky data is handled

  • Automatic matching ignores case, spaces, underscores, hyphens and dots, and recognizes common contact-export headers plus their equivalents in several languages (Vorname, Nachname, Teléfono, 姓名…). A plain Phone column is matched to Mobile phone and Email to Email (personal).
  • Commas, semicolons and backslashes in values are escaped as \,, ; and \\, and a line break becomes \n, as RFC 6350 requires. Acme, Inc. stays one company name.
  • Spaces around each value are trimmed. Accented and non-Latin names are written as UTF-8.
  • Lines longer than 75 bytes are folded onto continuation lines that start with a space, without splitting a multi-byte character. Lines end with CRLF.
  • A row with no name, company or email cannot become a valid card, so it is skipped and counted in a notice above the preview.

Troubleshooting

  • “Match at least one column to a contact field.” No header was recognized. Pick the columns yourself under Match columns to contact fields.
  • Names show as é after import. The CSV was not read as UTF-8. Choose its encoding (often Windows-1252 for older Outlook or Excel exports) under Import settings, check the preview, and download again.
  • A contact is missing. Its row had no name, company or email and was skipped; the notice above the preview shows how many. Map a name column or fill in the row.
  • An older address book rejects the file. Switch the vCard version to vCard 3.0 and download again.

Limits and privacy

Files up to 25 MB, 100,000 rows or 2 million cells open with a live preview of the first 200 rows. Larger files are converted in streaming mode: the file is read twice in chunks (once to measure the columns, once to write), a notice says the download covers the whole file, and Copy is not offered. A single output file is capped at 4 GB.

Contact data stays on your device: the conversion runs in a background worker in this tab, Cancel stops it, and the CSV is never sent to a server. With Batch: convert several files, every file uses the current column matches, so batch-convert only files that share the same headers.

Example

Three rows from a contact export, converted to vCard 4.0 with the automatic matches. The comma in Acme, Inc. and the line break in the note are escaped; the company-only row is named after the company; the last row has no name, company or email and is skipped. The downloaded file uses CRLF line endings.

Questions and answers

Should I choose vCard 4.0 or 3.0?

Start with 4.0 (RFC 6350), meant for current phones and apps. Use 3.0 (RFC 2426) if an older address book or CRM refuses the file; 3.0 also always includes the structured name it requires.

Do I get one file per contact?

No. All cards go into one .vcf file, one BEGIN:VCARD…END:VCARD block per row, which address books import as separate contacts.

Can I add photos or contact groups?

Not with this converter. It writes names, organization, job title, emails, phones, one address, website, birthday and notes.
